Science or the Divine - what do you believe in?

This moment you are in right now took 13.8 billions years to get here. Just take that in for a moment. The world coming in through your senses has been 13.8 billion years in the making. And so have you. What are the chances of these two meeting at this exact moment?

Over the years I’ve heard so many proclamations about the origin and creation of life, most of which have bewildered me - including from myself!

“It’s all energy!”

“We’re all one!”

What the heck is that all about?!

My hard won rationalism and well honed scientific mind had laid waste to such ‘wooly’ thinking, passing them off as ‘woo-woo’, outdated immature  thinking. Yet I’ve also had undeniable experiences of open receptivity, in which there was a sense of being at one with; an overall sense of One-ness, dare I say a sense of energy pulsing through my body. And I know I’m not the only one.

Cutting edge scientific discoveries are showing ever increasing correlations with the discoveries of long established spiritual traditions. Science and Spirituality are both means for discovering and experiencing Truth. Since their aims are similar, differing only in approach, there shouldn’t really be any conflict between them.

The reality is many of us can feel torn between spirituality and science. It’s like a constant battle with creation - however you see it. Settling neither in the scientific nor spiritual camp. We can get caught up in a bunch of personal thinking, picking and choosing between both to suit our own personal take on things. No wonder we’re in a pickle!

For many of us, ‘spiritual’ moments occur at certain times only. For instance walking in nature, going to a spa, momentary flashes of inspiration, or moments that blow your mind. The rest of the time it’s business as usual, ‘keeping it real’, ‘staying grounded’. Resulting in a sense of separation, isolation, flailing, stressed, FOMO, fear of failure, distracted, addicted, bored, destructive etc.

Despite our protests to the contrary, we don’t really believe in either divinity or science.

You see, if we had faith in either science or the One-ness of being, we would feel that sense of wide open wonder all the time. We wouldn’t take things so personally. Our hearts would be full of love and inspiration for all of creation, including ourselves.

The late David Bohm, one of the most significant theoretical physicists of the 20th century, contributing to unorthodox ideas to quantum theory, neuropsychology and the philosophy of mind said,

“Space is not empty. It is full, a plenum as opposed to a vacuum, and is the ground for the existence of everything, including ourselves. The universe is not separate from this cosmic sea of energy.”

Being Here

Quantum physicists are at the very frontier of modern science. They are steeped in the exploration of how the entire universe is created from an all-pervasive, indivisible field of energy called the quantum field. They’ve demonstrated that everything is made of light. They’re saying that creation came about through an underlying force - energy. They are showing us that each and every moment took 13.8 billion years to come into being and the same time for you also to appear here, in this moment.

This very moment before you is truly worthy of great respect and wonder. This moment will never come again. Each moment continually unfolds through time and space, over 13.8 billion years and counting. This is about as real, scientific and grounded as it gets. If you truly believed the science, you’d simply be blown away by every moment of this wondrous existence. Human intelligence may well know about things in minutiae, but it had nothing to do with the creation of all the elements necessary for all life on this planet.

We’ve not even begun to explore the nature and power of consciousness to create objects and experiences yet!

As rational people grounded in science, we should trust our scientists. They’re actually telling us that the basis of life and creation comes from a ubiquitous, formless energy source - the quantum field. And that everything is made of light. That’s not coming from ‘wooly’ thinking but deep research into the nature of the universe which we’re a part of. Is there anything more humbling, freeing, and worthy of awe?
