Discovering Sanctuary

meditation for healing

Meditation is an indispensable tool for healing mind and body, regardless of our religious or spiritual beliefs.

Particularly helpful is working with the idea of establishing a sanctuary - a safe space of stillness that everyone can access.

The benefits of being present and living in the moment are now mainstream, yet having a stable experience of that can remain elusive for many of us. Being present is equivalent to our experience of being alive, not the illusion of a life that is lost in thought.

Life is happening and can only ever be going on here and now; when we are lost in thought, we are not aware of that. The result is feeling off-centre, stressed, worried and anxious which can precipitate or prolong sickness. So a vital aspect of meditation training is learning how to be more alive.

Normally, most of us go around carrying more stress and tension than we realise. Learning to be more present through meditation can tone and regulate our nervous system as well as heal our emotional reactivity so that we start to have less extreme responses. Rather than being a place of sickness and insanity, our mind and body become a place of serenity and sanctuary.

We also meditate to calm the habit of overthinking. It is a practice of welcoming, not rejecting, what’s going on in our experience right now. The outcome is more clarity, greater perspective, ease and calm. We develop our capacity for real-time responsiveness from a place of peace, presence and boundless possibility. Our natural potential for patience, love and compassion will deepen alongside the wish to be in service for the common good.

To be able to meditate well we need to unlearn unhelpful habits and establish helpful ones. We also need to set up a daily practice and know that we are on the right track. Certain key indicators let you know the meditation is progressing and there are ones that are a sure sign you are off track. We can learn these tools and hone our skills through sitting regularly with a dedicated group of people and experienced guidance.
